Another Round Review
A beautiful encapsulation of people's downward spiral into alcoholism, Another Round follows Martin, a high school teacher (Mads Mikkelsen) who feels ignored at his workplace and in this family until he breaks bad, so to speak. Getting a bit drunk makes someone feel more confident and lively and so the motivation makes a lot of sense but he takes it to an extreme by drinking before and during his classes and his behaviour then bleeds into his personal life.
The movie maintains a tight balance in tone. At times darkly hilarious and other times deeply tragic and disturbing, it's a movie that works in every aspect from its finely focused script, highly motivated cinematography and editing, and incredible performances from Mikkelsen, Thomas Bo Larsen as one of his friends who plunges into extreme alcohol dependency, and Maria Bonnevie as his wife who's paradoxically just as emotionally distant as she is emotionally invested in a decaying marriage. Every scene feels conflicted with layers upon layers of subtext and different character motivations that culminates in one of the most darkest final scenes in any movie I've ever seen. Another Round is worth your time and it's one of my favourite movies since Vinterberg and Mikkelsen's last collaboration in 2012's The Hunt.
